Jailbreak Attack Detection (Public Preview)

This new feature focuses on detecting Jailbreak Attacks, which pose significant risks to Large Language Model (LLM) deployments.

What is a Jailbreak Attack and why it is important to protect your Generative AI-powered product against them?

A Jailbreak Attack, also known as a User Prompt Injection Attack (UPIA), is an intentional attempt by a user to exploit the vulnerabilities of an LLM-powered system, bypass its safety mechanisms, and provoke restricted behaviors. These attacks can lead to the LLM generating inappropriate content or performing actions restricted by System Prompt or RHLF.

As AI technology becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it is crucial to ensure its responsible and secure use. Protecting LLM deployments against Jailbreak Attacks helps maintain the integrity and safety of AI powered products, preventing potential misuse by malicious actors.

The Azure AI Platform Responsible AI team has developed a state-of-the-art Jailbreak Attack Detection model that identifies anomalies in user prompts as potential Jailbreak Attacks. The model was developed using multiple data sources like intel sourced and curated by the Bing DIRT team.

This powerful tool enhances the security of LLM deployments by detecting Jailbreak Attacks based on their patterns and intents, rather than the outcomes or the harmful completions that might follow. Attack Classes might include user prompts that present requests to the model to change or bypass rules in the System Message, role play, encoding attacks and more.

This new filter complements existing content filters and safety mechanisms that prevent AI systems from responding to inappropriate or dangerous requests. Prerequisites

  • An Azure subscription - Create one for free
  • Once you have your Azure subscription, create a Content Safety resource in the Azure portal to get your key and endpoint. Enter a unique name for your resource, select the subscription you entered on the application form, and select a resource group, supported region, and supported pricing tier. Then select Create.
    • The resource takes a few minutes to deploy. After it finishes, Select go to resource. In the left pane, under Resource Management, select Subscription Key and Endpoint. The endpoint and either of the keys are used to call APIs.

Analyze Text Content for Jailbreak Risk Detection

The following section walks through a sample request with cURL. Paste the command below into a text editor, and make the following changes.

  1. Replace <endpoint> with the endpoint URL associated with your resource.
  2. Replace <your_subscription_key> with one of the keys that come with your resource.
  3. Optionally, replace the "text" field in the body with your own text you'd like to analyze.
